CREATE YOUR OWN AMBIANCE PROGRAMS
Professionals and creative audiophiles can create thousands of noticeably different ambiance programs using my OPTIMUM
AMBIANCETM software tool. Completely different from reverberation systems that attempt to simulate real acoustic spaces, this
software (patent pending) works at the extreme high frequencies to turn gritty sounds into music. Every delay (sound
reflection) is wide band replica of the input signal delayed a controllable amount of time. Extremely flexible sets of shelf type
equalizers make the reverberation work on the frequencies where it is really needed to smooth the sound, often the extreme
highs. You can use the software just to make your sound more musical and reduce high frequency irritants, or to add a sense
of space, or both.
Reverberation programs can be as short as 10 milliseconds or as long as 10 seconds. There are two modes, low density
where the number of delays can be as few as 23, and high density where the number of delays can reach 400,000.
Or you can set individually adjustable single delays for 1 to 7 of the channels. Separate input channel and reverberation
mixers enable complete control of the amount of direct signal and reverberation signal in each output channel. You can store
all your new reverberation and mix settings in libraries and later recall the entire setup. The program includes 40 ambiance
push-button selections and more than 300 mix and ambiance combinations automatically set by a 35 position selector for the
number of input channels. A set of 8 graphs displays contours of the delay amplitudes versus time and their frequency
response curves. Algorithms set the polarities of the various delays so their additions and subtractions at various frequencies
produce a pleasing effect.
OPTIMUM AMBIANCE is a companion to my tone control program AUDIO SPLENDORTM. Either can be upgraded to the full
program SPLENDOR & AMBIANCETM from which each is derived.
REDUCED LISTENING FATIGUE
Most available program material has moments when the high frequencies are irritating enough to cause the listener to turn the
volume down below the point of maximum enjoyment for the rest of the program - and sometimes to just turn it off. Burwen
processing greatly reduces high frequency irritants via its combination of subtle high frequency reverberation (patent pending)
and precise tone rebalancing. The result is emotional reconnection with the music unlike anything that can be achieved with
any other known technology. You can listen longer. High frequency irritants can originate from the recording or transmission
process, bit reduction, studio mixing, the musical instruments, and dry acoustics at recording and playback.
A LOT OF MATH
Hyperthreading computer and a Microsoft Office Excel workbook that contains all the controls and calculations to produce filter
coefficients sent to the DSP program. The hidden calculation sheet in this workbook evaluates 1,400,000 formulas, some
more than 150 characters long. Moving the 200 position DLYS control even one point causes 100,000 calculations. The
workbook occupies 51 MB of disk space, probably a record size, and the libraries take additional space.
The Pentium 4 processor connected by Firewire to an A/D and D/A box has the power to permit many times the number of
delays possible with any DSP chip. Compared with the old DSP96002 DSP chips I used for many years to make tone controls
and simple reverberation, the Pentium 4 is doing the job of 300 of the old chips, the most powerful available when I started.
